Lalla Zehra Cooking Class
Learn it with your hands
There is a different kind of understanding that comes from making a dish yourself. Ingredients acquire a weight and a smell; a technique becomes a movement you can remember. At Lalla Zehra, the setting for that lesson is a farmhouse outside Marrakech, with a garden, an outdoor kitchen and a table waiting for the meal.
The cooking centres on Moroccan food, including tajines and traditional bread. The house’s own photographs show the process clearly: vegetables laid out, preserved lemons being explained, dough handled and pots lined up to cook. It is a sequence with its own visual pleasure, from the raw ingredients to the finished table.
This is where food and design meet most naturally for us. Clay, fire, timber, cloth and produce all have a job to do. Their beauty comes partly from that usefulness. A well-set table means more when you have watched the meal take shape.
Give the people teaching as much attention as the surroundings. The point of the experience is something you can carry back into your own kitchen: a method, a new familiarity with an ingredient, or simply the confidence to gather people around something you have made.
Classes are small and relaxed, and finish at the table with everything you have cooked. A good first morning in the city.
